Vancouver Island has some of the last coastal old growth forests in the world, and we need to be serious about protecting them. Clear cutting these forests is not sustainable. Once they’ve been logged, they are gone forever.
Nearly 30 years ago, I was involved in the efforts to protect Carmanah and Walbran. It’s hard to believe, with everything we now know, and understanding all that we’ve lost, that short-term thinking continues to dominate decision-making.
In Question Period, I asked the Minister of FLNRORD how the government can justify the continued logging of old-growth trees. Here is his response.
